What´s On Málaga & Costa Del Sol - September 2019

Festivals and Fairs

September is known as the month of festivals and fairs in Malaga and the Costa del Sol. From pilgrimages to fruit harvests, patron saints' days to days of joyous celebration, you can spend every weekend mingling with the locals and enjoying everything that authentic Spanish life has to offer if you visit the region in September. 

Some of the most significant, culturally important, or simply the most fun celebrations to be a part of are listed below:

Grape Harvest Festival in Manilva
When: Friday 31^st August – Sunday 2^nd September

Head to Manilva on the first weekend in September to celebrate the Spanish grape in all of its many guises. You can eat grapes, enjoy wine tasting sessions, and the festival also includes other events such as flamenco dancing, and the Virgen de los Delores parade. The grape harvest festival is well worth a visit if you’re hoping to enjoy cultural and folkloric activities.

The lively festival takes place in the centre of Manilva and lasts for three full days: if you visit after 10pm on the Friday then you can enjoy an evening of Flamenco, which is an integral part of the festival.

Embrujo Andalusi Carratraca
When:  Friday 6^th September – Sunday 8^th September

This is a festival that transports you to the past and helps you to truly appreciate the culture and history of Andalucia. The town of Carratraca is transformed with the addition of a medieval market and historical theatre: you can also enjoy traditional Andalucian dancing, parades, and children’s activities. Visitors with a sweet tooth will be excited to try the Arabic teas and sweets, whilst after dark there will be a firework show on each night of the festival.

The highlight of this festival is the 25,000 candles that line the street, creating an awe-inspiring visual spectacle, particularly after dark: it is an ideal photo opportunity, and a sight that you will never forget.

Ajoblanco Festival in Almachar
When: Saturday 7^th September

An ideal choice for gastronomes the Ajoblanco Festival is a free event which features fine cuisine and other traditional festival entertainment. The star dish of the festival is, of course, Ajoblanco, which is made of almonds and juice. You’ll also find many other food carts as well as regional dancing, flamenco dancing, and opportunities to socialise and mingle with the locals: all of Almachar turn out for this rustic and charming event.

Wonder Fair in Maro, Nerja
When: Sunday 8^th September

The Wonder Fair (known as the Feria de las Maravillas in Spanish) is an ancient fair that was first hosted at the location in the sixteenth century. As well as traditional Spanish fair activities, such as children’s dancing and a fireworks show, visitors will marvel at the parade of the Virgin of Los Maravillas which is a traditional Spanish religious parade.

Travellers looking for modern activities will enjoy the late night music, barbeques on the beach, and many other fun festivities too.

Malaga Fashion Week 2019
When: Friday 13^th and Saturday 14^th September

Dedicated followers of fashion will delight at Malaga Fashion Week, which is a high-fashion event that is open to members of the public as well as to fashionistas and fashion designers. This year the event will incorporate a creative fashion contest designed to encourage young talent into the fashion industry.

Calle Larios in the heart of the city will be adorned with a huge red carpet where models will walk and showcase the latest designs. An average of 15,000 people visit Malaga fashion week every day. Will you join them in 2019?
