Spanish Public Holidays for 2023 Revealed

It’s important to know when the public holidays in Spain are for several reasons: so that you can plan your own holidays and make the most of your annual leave, and so that you know when certain key locations in the country will be crowded with tourists and residents making the most of a family day out. The Official Spanish State Gazette has now released a full and official list of all the public and bank holidays in Spain for 2023. Now that these dates have been released, they cannot be changed, so now is the perfect time to mark them on your calendar! In Spain, public holidays are often referred to as ‘red days’ because they are traditionally marked on calendars in red. Here’s everything you need to know about Spanish public holidays for 2023:

How Many Public Holidays Will There Be?

Unlike in other countries, including the UK, not all of the public holidays in Spain are celebrated by the whole nation or on the same day. This means that one region may be busy enjoying a holiday celebration, whilst in another everyone is still spending a normal day in the office.

In 2023, everyone living in Spain will enjoy a total of 14 public holidays. 8 of these days will be the same across all of Spain’s autonomous communities, whilst four of these days will be selected by each of the autonomous regions with another two days chosen by the local councils of each of the municipalities. It’s very important, therefore, to ensure that you are looking at the days for the right region when working out your holiday schedule, or you could end up disappointed.

This year, many of the public holidays will fall on either a Friday or a Monday. This means that Spanish residents will be able to take advantage of five long weekends throughout 2023.

When Will the Public Holidays Be?

The eight public holidays that will be celebrated by all of the autonomous regions across Spain will fall on the following dates in 2023:

  • April 7: Good Friday (Friday)
  • May 1: Labour Day (Monday)
  • August 15: Assumption of the Virgin (Tuesday)
  • October 12: National Day of Spain (Thursday)
  • November 1: All Saints (Wednesday)
  • December 6: Day of the Spanish Constitution (Wednesday)
  • December 8: Immaculate Conception (Friday)
  • December 25: Christmas Day (Monday)

The remaining four public holidays are assigned by the autonomous governments of each region. These days vary from region to region because they are usually assigned to celebrate events or holy days of regional significance. Here is a full list of each of the bank holidays that will be observed, by region. Simply look for your autonomous region on the list to discover when your 2023 holidays will be:
