Spain Is Now One Of Europe’s Top Destinations For Digital Nomads

Digital nomads are exploding in popularity and many European countries are hoping to appeal to this growing economic demographic. A digital nomad is a person who earns their living by working online from any location they choose rather than from a fixed office or business premises. Most digital nomads use this freedom to travel and see the world whilst making money at the same time.

Now new data released by Absolute Digital Media has discovered that Spain is one of the top 20 destinations in Europe for digital nomads. Here’s everything you need to know about the report and why Spain is such a popular destination for digital nomads:

Why Is Spain So Popular With Digital Nomads?

The research conducted by the team at Absolute Digital Media assessed 37 European countries and used a set criteria to determine whether a destination was an attractive location for digital nomads. Some of the factors in the criteria ranged from essential information such as the cost of living and the internet speed to nice-to-haves such as the average price of a cup of coffee, happiness levels, the availability of co-working spaces, local transportation costs, and taxi fares.

Each category was given a score to ensure that the rankings were as accurate as possible. Within this criteria, Spain came in joint 13th place (alongside Lithuania) of the best places to be a digital nomad in Europe.  North Macedonia took the number one spot whilst Switzerland came at the bottom of the list.

There are many reasons why Spain is so popular with digital nomads. It has the 7th fastest internet speed in Europe, and with connection speeds of 134 megabits per second, even the most tech-dependent digital nomads will be able to work with ease in the country.

The average cost of a cup of coffee in the country is just 1.90 euros, making Spain the 11th most affordable European country to get a daily caffeine fix, and because remote workers and digital nomads are so welcome in Spain you’ll find a huge number of affordable co-working spaces. 790 of them to be precise. This makes Spain the country with the 3rd largest number of co-working spaces in Europe.

This on top of the laid-back Spanish way of life, the great year-round weather, and the good work-life balance that is offered in the country and it’s easy to see why Spain is such a popular choice for digital nomads.

Is It Easy To Be A Digital Nomad In Spain?

Living and working in Spain as a non-EU national, particularly as a Briton, has become more complicated in recent years. But the Spanish government sees the value of digital nomads and what they can add to the Spanish economy, so in late 2022 the Spanish government agreed to introduce a Digital Nomad Visa. Digital Nomad Visas are growing in popularity with many countries worldwide now offering these to entice digital nomads. These visas are much easier to obtain than other visas in the country and provide a great opportunity for remote workers to stay in the country.

Digital nomad visas in Spain are valid for up to three years and are aimed specifically at non-EU nationals.

The Benefits Of Being A Digital Nomad

Digital nomadism is a great way to explore the world and live overseas whilst still earning an income and without sacrificing career progression. It also offers better work life balance, as you can work at your own pace and carve out time for exploration, or spending time with family and friends. Many digital nomads report that their productivity has increased as a result of their lifestyle. What’s more, digital nomads tend to be more motivated and happier than conventional office workers.
