A Comprehensive List Of The Dog-Friendly Beaches In Spain

When you think of beaches in Spain, you probably think of vast expanses of beautiful sand where you can swim, sunbathe, and relax with your friends and family. But if your family includes a four-legged companion then you may be wondering if your dog can join in the fun too.

Whilst it is dangerous for dogs to be out in the sun in the heat of a summer’s day, some pups love nothing more than cooling down in the sea when the temperatures start too cool.

But where can you take your dog?

Whilst Spain boasts more than 8,000 km of coastline, very few of these beaches actually don’t allow dogs. In a bid to keep Spain’s beaches clean and free from waste, many local regions choose not to allow dogs on the sand.

Each beach has its own rules regarding pets. Most don’t allow dogs at all, whilst some will have designated dog sections, or only allow dogs to take to the shoreline at certain times of the day. For that reason, you are advised to check the rules for your local dog-friendly beach before you take a trip that could end in disappointment.

Some expats mistakenly believe that they can take their dog on any beach provided it is on a leash. Whilst this may be the rule in some countries, it is not the rule in Spain, and could result in you being issued a steep fine. Not to mention disapproving comments from other beachgoers.

If dogs are not permitted on a beach, then this will be clearly signposted before you enter the beach, and there are no exceptions to this rule.

If this all sounds frustrating then the good news is that there are some beaches in Spain that are dog friendly. Here is a comprehensive list of all the beaches in Spain where you can enjoy some beach-time fun with your four-legged friends:
